The Macmillan Way is a 290-mile walk from Boston in Lincolnshire to Abbotsbury in Dorset. It links up several existing long-distance walks and is mainly off-road along footpaths, bridleways and rights of way. I first did the North-South route in 2005 in memory of my dear older sister, and best friend, Jackie Stewart who died suddenly in 2004. I then raised £3,700 for Macmillan Cancer Care.
On completion of that walk, filled with the adrenalin of success, I made a pact with my walking companion to do it again but to turn round at Abbotsbury and walk all the way back to Boston, which is what we are attempting this time, starting from Boston on Saturday 13 September and, hopefully, getting back to Boston on Saturday 25 October. We will be staying in a variety of B&Bs and with friends along the way. I am just hoping and praying for an Indian Summer this year!!
It is my intention to publish a daily log on this Blog site which will include mileage, events, successes/disasters (like last time when I was taken unawares by some nettles while answering the call of nature!!) and some photos (nothing fantastic as I will only be taking my mobile phone).
Our packs will be heavy as we will be carrying everything we need for 6 weeks - clothes, waterproofs, toiletries, spare shoes, first aid kit (including blister plasters!), phone chargers, GPS, maps, thermos flasks and water bottles etc etc. No camping gear as that would be the straw to break my back, never mind a camel!!
